Spring has officially landed in the Northern Hemisphere!

With the changing weather, you might experience some unpleasant irritations happening to your skin. Warmer temperature, higher humidity, pollen in the air, and increased exposure to sunlight challenges the skin’s well-being and natural balance. During spring, your skin could easily get triggered and experience unexpected flare-ups and breakouts. Unusual dryness and itchiness, eczema, dermatitis, rashes, rosacea, acne, and insect bites are some of the most common spring skin issues.

If your skin is prone to suffering from any of those conditions, you may like to explore some potent natural ingredients for relief. Calendula-infused skin care products are one of the best choices to soothe and relieve skin effectively yet naturally.

What is calendula?

Calendula is known as Marigold and it originated from the Mediterranean and some parts of Asia. It is an annual flowering herb and it blooms in the fall. The color of the charming blossom ranges from bright yellow to deep orange. Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine have been using calendula flowers for helping prevent infections and healing injuries for centuries. Nowadays, calendula is highly regarded for its medical and culinary benefits around the world.

Why is calendula beneficial for skin?

Calendula has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties, which makes it the perfect natural ingredient for calming and healing the skin. It has been proven to soothe skin irritation, reduce redness and swelling. Beyond being an excellent active ingredient in natural skincare, calendula’s medicinal characteristics are powerful for relieving acne, red cheeks, rashes, sunburn, and especially eczema.

There are many skincare products in the market that take advantage of calendula’s calming and anti-inflammatory effects.  For example, Kiehl’s Calendula Extract Toner is a top-rated product for reducing facial redness and oil.

What is eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition that results in dry and itchy skin. Other symptoms include rashes, discoloured patches, rough and scaly skin, swelling, cracked and broken skin, and so on. It could begin early in childhood and it’s becoming increasingly common among young children. About 10% of the US population have experienced eczema in their lifetime. Even though eczema is not life-threatening in most known cases, uncontrolled eczema could lead to much more severe complications that compromise quality of life and shorten life expectancy. Therefore, it is crucial to manage eczema symptoms under control and prevent it from worsening and spreading to other parts of the body.

Common Treatments and Side Effects

Hydrocortisone cream is most commonly used to treat eczema and other similar skin issues. It is effective in providing relief from eczema, rashes, insect bites, dermatitis, acne, and other forms of skin itching and irritations. However, hydrocortisone is a steroid medicine. Like many other topical steroid treatments, it may cause side effects including burning/stinging sensation, dryness, redness, and thinning of skin (known as Atrophy). In addition, it is not safe for children under 2-years-old and to be used in delicate areas such as around the eyes. As a result, there’re certain risks that need to be taken into consideration while using topical hydrocortisone. Using a natural alternative is a much safer choice for people who are concerned about the potential side effects from steroids.

Calendula as the Natural Alternative

Due to calendula’s proven power in calming skin inflammations, irritations, and itchiness, products made with calendula are excellent choices to replace topical hydrocortisone cream.
